How to improve streaming quality: 9 practical tips

A sharper picture and fewer stutters: nine practical tips for your network, device and player app.

Published Updated 2 min read

Stream quality depends on three links: your internet connection, your device and your player app. These tips help you get the most out of each one.

Your network

  1. Use an Ethernet cable wherever possible. Cable is more stable than Wi-Fi.
  2. Choose 5 GHz Wi-Fi if cable isn't an option, and place your router high and unobstructed.
  3. Consider mesh Wi-Fi in larger homes or with thick walls.
  4. Limit heavy downloads while watching, such as game updates or cloud backups.

Your device

  1. Keep your software up to date, on both your TV and your stick or box.
  2. Free up storage: remove unused apps and clear your player's cache.
  3. Restart your stick or box now and then; it fixes many small issues.

Your player app

  1. Try a different player engine (hardware or software decoding) in the settings.
  2. Increase the buffer size if your app allows it.
