How to fix buffering: why your stream stutters

Is your stream stuttering or stuck loading? Find the cause of buffering and fix it step by step.

Buffering means your player is playing the video faster than it's arriving. The buffer empties and the picture pauses. The cause almost always lies in one of these four areas.

1. The internet connection

Test your speed on the viewing device itself. As a guideline you need around 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 20 for Full HD and 30 or more for 4K. Stability matters even more: Wi-Fi through several walls fluctuates a lot.

2. The home network

  • Restart your modem and router (unplug for 30 seconds).
  • Check whether other devices are using lots of data at the same time.
  • Use an Ethernet cable or move the device closer to the router.

3. The device

Older sticks and TVs can struggle with demanding 4K streams. Restart the device, clear your player's cache and pick a lower quality if needed.

4. The app settings

Switch between hardware and software decoding in your player and increase the buffer if possible. Update the app to the latest version.
